The Effect of Bulk Deformation on Ploughing Friction - Pater, V.W. (Vincent)

Summary

Friction is one of the most important factors in the cold rolling process. In light of this fact, understanding and accurately modeling friction is essential to control and improve the process. Several tribological mechanisms are relevant to the cold rolling process, one of which — namely the ploughing of asperities through a substrate — has been the focus of this thesis.

Prevous studies have used elastic substrates for ploughing experiments. However, literature indicates that the the presence of plastic bulk deformation could have a big influence on this phenomenon.

Several experiments have been performed which show that the presence of bulk plasticity has a significant influence on the substrate hardness and the ploughing stresses. In this case, the hardness and the ploughing stresses were between 13 and 15% lower when ploughing through a plastically deforming substrate compared to an elastic one.
