Samenvatting

Currently, mainly materials from non-renewable sources are applied in the packaging of FrieslandCampina products. However, the usage of fossil-based plastics contributes to climate change, causing a threat to the environment and our health. Because of this, FrieslandCampina has set goals in packaging development regarding sustainability. The first is that their entire packaging portfolio must be recyclable and/or reusable by 2030, and the second is for their packaging to be fully circular and climate-neutral by 2050. To decrease the difficulty in becoming fully circular and climate-neutral by 2050, FrieslandCampina wants to investigate whether other renewable, biodegradable, or recyclable materials would be suitable for application in FrieslandCampina`s strategy surrounding sustainability, while simultaneously resolving some of the current issues surrounding the recycling and reuse of current packages. As a result, this assignment was set up to determine the feasibility of renewable material application in the packaging portfolio of FrieslandCampina. Among other things, the assignment involves research into the material properties of different renewable materials, a risk analysis on renewable material application, and conducting a selection of tests on a renewable material packaging prototype. Based on the findings, the current feasibility of renewable material application is determined, and FrieslandCampina is provided with future recommendations conforming the application of renewable materials in their packaging portfolio.
