Summary

AVEX is a leading company in the Dutch audio-visual industry. It has grown quickly to a company with approximately 250 employees. At AVEX, the economic situation is healthy, but the management has recognised several inefficiencies due to fast growth and market changes. Standardisation is an initiative of the company to reduce these inefficiencies. With standardisation, the company means the repeated use of designs and quotations, instead of starting a new design process for every solution (AVEX’ name for its products and systems).

During this research, several approaches and methods have been developed to improve efficiency and internal adoption of standardisation. Workflows were analysed to gather more insight in the differences between project types and their resource demands. For standard solutions, a new workflow is developed, containing only the necessary steps to create a product. Besides the new workflow, impact of standardisation on the development process is considered. To achieve more continuity in the workflow, purchase and supply chain recommendations are provided which improve certainty of delivery. The strategic impact of standardisation on AVEX’ market positions is considered by mapping external opportunities and threats against strengths and weaknesses of the organisation.

This research result is more insight of the company’s role on the market and it provides organisational improvements to optimally utilize the chosen method; standardisation.
